I found the following tweet in my stream the other day. I was going to ignore it because, well, it was just a tweet.  But I had just spoken to @SwiftInkEditor about this exact issue. Here is the tweet:

I’ll take a few #askeditor #askagent #askpub questions while I am waiting for the medicine to kick in. #writing #publishing #books

Here is my issue with it. This specific person keeps adding services to their “publishing house”. Which is fine, big dreams and all that. But how can you be a publisher and agent an editor and a manager? Isn’t it better to be good at one thing since all those take years of practice to have any clue as to what you are doing? But then it gets better.  An author asked this person where they hire their editors for the books they decide to publish. They outsource! For free editors! Including people that have never edited before!

That seems insane to me. Having the pleasure of having met several editors through twitter and other social media, I have had countless hours on the topic of how becoming an editor takes years and I education! EDUCATION! I mean if it didn’t, wouldn’t all of us that like to read just call ourselves editors? Beta readers? Sure.  Editors? Um. No.

So what say you? Publisher, agent, manager and editor. All in one little neat package. Possible or not?

And my second question: Would you edit a book for free?
